Welcome to Typography Studio at the School of Art!
Typography generally refers to the arrangement of letters and words on a surface. To most people, most of the time, typography is invisible. They look “through” words — past their shapes and their form — for their meaning. Within graphic design practice, typography is one of the richest areas for formal exploration, precisely because it is invisible — it has an enormous impact on the way readers read and process information.
As typography students, you will be asked to consider the way language looks and how this affects meaning. Your will be required to consider how shifts in the appearance of language can change the way it signifies. We will spend this semester looking at the way typography has developed historically and where it is at today, while working through a series of projects designed as an introduction to using typography effectively and thinking about typography creatively as a graphic designer.
